A Cuban photojournalist has been found dead in his home in Mexico after he invited two individuals over and they allegedly suffocated him.
The lifeless body of tragic Hector Reyes, 43, was found by his partner in his home in the Alvaro Obregon borough of Mexico City on the morning of 17th March.
His relatives say he had invited two individuals over the night before to thank them for getting him a job as a security guard.
But the individuals allegedly suffocated him and stole his belongings, including a computer and a mobile phone.
The Cuban poet Ibis Martin had spoken with his friend just two days before he was killed.
He said: “We had a joint project, which will see the light of day someday, and I will do everything possible as soon as I can to make it happen.
“He was very good as a poet, not to mention his chronicles. I only hope that those murderers are found and held accountable for what they have done.
“Wherever he is, may he rest in peace and know that I loved him because he was always super kind and respectful to me.”
Hector hailed from the city of Santa Clara, where Che Guevara is buried.
He studied journalism at the Faculty of Communication in Havana before working at the Cuban News Agency and the newspaper Vanguardia.
He travelled to at least 14 countries as a photojournalist.
Mexico’s National Institute of Migration granted him permanent residence in the country in 2022.
The identity and whereabouts of his alleged killers are unknown.
Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders ranked Mexico the deadliest country for journalists in 2022.
