Human-Like Robot Joins Cheer Squad At College Sports Event

A Chinese robot is the latest to join the race to move like a human, but it seems it still needs a little help from its friends.

Several video clips show the human-like robot strutting its feet and ‘cheering’ with one arm during the opening ceremony at a school’s sports event as it blends in with the entire marching band.

The mechanical man was brought to the event by students attending Peking University, located in China’s capital city of Beijing, reportedly on 20th April.

One video shows the black-coloured robot being helped out onto the stadium by two male students who had covered it with a grey cloth before its surprise appearance.

An earlier clip shows the robot, dressed in a white jacket like the rest of the cheer squad, trying to keep up with the routine during the sports games’ opening ceremony.

One of the clips, shared later on Douyin, the Chinese TikTok, was captioned: “Parade of the sports event, I unilaterally declare that the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Research has won!”

Online commentators like ‘Director Of Yuanverse Mental Retardation Center’ said: “I think it’s very impressive to be able to stand still. After all, it took foreign companies more than ten years to develop robots that can run and jump.”

And user ‘Yanzi’ said: “It’s amazing that college students can make humanoid robots like this.”

User ‘Strawberry balls’ added: “At first I thought he was an African student with a disability and a strong will, and I didn’t even dare to laugh.”
