Turkish authorities say these newly-released images show Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul a week before he was murdered there.
The images, taken from CCTV footage reportedly dated 28th September 2018, show former Washington Post columnist Khashoggi, 59, arriving at the consulate in a yellow jumper along with his Turkish fiancee Hatice Cengiz.
Reports state Khashoggi was at the consulate to receive documents before his marriage to Cengiz.
The journalist and prominent critic of the Saudi government was murdered on his last visit to the consulate on 2nd October 2018.
Saudi investigators concluded that Khashoggi was forcibly restrained and injected with a large amount of an unspecified drug, resulting in an overdose that led to his death. However, Turkish officials allege he was strangled.
The journalist’s body was then allegedly dismembered and given to a local “collaborator” outside the consulate. Khashoggi’s remains were never found.
The new images come after the public prosecutor in Turkey released the complete indictment against 20 Saudi citizens who are charged with the murder.
Those charged include deputy intelligence chief of Saudi Arabia Ahmed al-Assiri and the Saudi royal court’s media chief Saud al-Qahtani.
The indictment alleged they led the operation and gave orders to a team of Saudi hitmen to carry out the brutal killing.
A court in Saudi Arabia sentenced five people to death in December 2019 and three others were jailed for the murder.
However, United Nations Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard said the trial represented “the antithesis of justice” and added on social media: “Bottom line: the hit-men are guilty, sentenced to death. The masterminds not only walk free. They have barely been touched by the investigation and the trial.”
The case is ongoing.
