Student, 17, Who Called Out Teacher For Rape Jokes Being Sued For GBP 170K

A schoolgirl who called out her teacher for making rape jokes in class – in the process sparking a national debate on sex education in Malaysia – is being sued by him for GBP 170,000.

Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, 17, said on Twitter on 4th August that she was handed notification of the defamation lawsuit while taking an online lesson.

The high school student wrote: “In the letter, I was given seven days to respond to the demands, including to settle MYR 1 million (GBP 170,384) in damages.”

After a health education class in April, the Malaysian teen called out her teacher for telling rape jokes in class on social media.

Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, 17, called out her teacher for making rape jokes in class in April 2021, in a video, on 4th August, she shared on Twitter that she received a letter of demand for ‘defamatory statements’, with several demands, including a payment of RM 1,000,000 (GBP 170,355) in compensation, in Malaysia.

Her post sparked a national debate and the teen became associated with the trending hashtag ‘MakeSchoolASaferPlace’.

However, as well as widespread support, the girl also received online abuse as well as death and rape threats, according to local media.

Reports said the headmaster at Ain’s school, name not disclosed, also ripped into the teen, dubbing her “Satan’s spawn wearing a headscarf”, a “hypocrite”, and telling her parents to “show her some manners”.

At the same time, the Education Ministry moved the teacher in question to another school in May.

The teen’s dad Saiful Nizam said: “The letter is from the teacher from Ain’s previous school.”

However, the father added that his daughter never once named the teacher in question or the name of her school.

He added: “We are currently seeking advice from our lawyers on how to handle this issue. The letter addresses three names that include me, my wife, and my daughter Ain.”
