Mexican Human Rights Activist, 51, Who Was Seeking Justice For Murder Of Daughter Shot Dead In Bar

A Mexican human rights activist who fought for justice for her murdered daughter has been shot dead at her place of work.

The shooting took place in the city of Temixco in the Mexican state of Morelos at around 11.30pm on 28th January.

Ana Luisa Garduno Juarez, 51, was killed at the Apolo XI bar she managed, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Morelos Attorney General’s Office said: “The involvement of the State Attorney General’s Office was requested while personnel from the Morelos Police and the National Guard secured the area and carried out an operation to search for and locate the alleged perpetrator(s).”

The bar was secured while forensics experts carried out an investigation, and the victim’s body was taken to a nearby morgue to undergo an autopsy.

The victim was reportedly shot three times, in the neck, chest and left arm.

Morelos governor Cuauhtemoc Blanco, 49, condemned the killing and said the authorities would do everything in their power to bring those responsible to justice.

Mexico’s Interior Undersecretary Alejandro Encinas urged the Morelos Attorney General’s Office to get to the bottom of the murder as quickly as possible, adding that the victim’s role as a human rights activist should not be ruled out of the investigation.

Garduno Juarez was seeking justice for the femicide of her daughter Ana Karen Huicochea, who was killed on 12th December 2012, allegedly by the young woman’s boyfriend.

The investigation into the activist’s murder is ongoing. No arrests have been made yet.
