The Swiss authorities have begun charging tourists to take selfies at an idyllic lake beauty spot featured in a popular South Korean Netflix show after thousands of people started visiting the site.
Ever since the jetty on Lake Brienz in Iseltwald, on the southern shore of Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, was featured in a Netflix documentary, it has been a favourite with South Korean tourists, as can be seen in this footage.
And now the authorities are cashing in, reportedly charging CHF 5 (GBP 4.50) per selfie, having installed a turnstile at the spot, with local media justifying the decision by saying that the tourists rarely spend any money in the town.
The scene became popular after it featured in the South Korean rom-com “Crash Landing on You”, when one of the protagonists can be seen playing the piano on the jetty.
The story follows Yoon Se-ri, a wealthy South Korean heiress played by Son Ye-jin, who falls in love with army officer Ri Jeong-hyeok, played by Hyun Bin, after she has a paragliding accident and lands in North Korea.
The rush for selfies at the scenic spot has reportedly not slowed down since July 2022, with four new buses added to the route to the area.
It is estimated that over 400,000 tourists are now flocking to the village of 420 souls every year.
